KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori has eulogised mama Sarah Obama as a woman who for decades, ran a foundation in Kenya to help educate orphans and girls, something she felt strongly about as she couldn’t read herself. Misori said that kind of passion for education was liberation for the girl child whose fruits should be seen and celebrated for a long time to come.

On 19 November 2014, Sarah Obama received the Pioneer Award from the United Nations for the work of an education foundation that she headed, as a part of Women’s Entrepreneurship Day.

She was the third wife of Hussein Onyango Obama, President Obama’s paternal grandfather. She died early on Monday at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Refferal Hospital in Kisumu where she was receiving treatment having been taken ill a week ago.
